Mustang Drinkware’s Alert On BPA Products

The media recently reported that Health Canada is poised to render its report regarding Bisphenol-A ("BPA") and the safety of BPA when used in plastic products including water bottles. To date, Health Canada has taken the position that products containing BPA pose no health risk to users. However, early indications as reported in the media regarding the imminent report suggest that Health Canada may, in its report, change its characterization of BPA to a dangerous substance.

Although the official report on BPA from Health Canada is not expected to be released until May, in the interest of customer health and safety, Mustang Drinkware Inc. has elected to immediately cease all production and development of all water bottles containing BPA and develop a new line of replacement products with BPA-free hydration alternatives.

Any orders in house for Polycarbonate water bottles will not be shipped and the product will be disposed of.

We have already launched a series of both Aluminum and Stainless water bottles and are working on having these product approved by our Licensors and available sale in the near future.

The Truth About #7

Contrary to recent media reports ( Including The Today Show from April 10th ) a plastic bottle marked with the #7 does not imply bisphenol-A (BPA). The #7 indicator is a recycling code, which is used for all plastics that do not fit into the #1-6 designation. The #7   includes many different types of plastics, if the container is manufactured using a blend of plastics, eg. two or more plastics (PET and any other polymer), the container should be identified 7,  but does not mean it contains BPA

What Is BPA?

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic resins, epoxy resins, and other products. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical building block that is used primarily to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastic is a lightweight, high-performance plastic that possesses a unique balance of toughness, optical clarity, high heat resistance, and excellent electrical resistance. Because of these attributes, polycarbonate is used in a wide variety of common products including digital media (e.g., CDs, DVDs), electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles, sports safety equipment, reusable food and drink containers , and many other products.

Is Polycarbonate Safe?

While there is no consensus on the issues surrounding BPA, recent comprehensive reviews polycarbonates and BPA have all concluded that estimated daily exposure to BPA poses no known safety risk. These conclusions have all been confirmed through tests by:

-       The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

-       US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

-       The Harvard Center for Risk Analysis

-       The American Council on Science & Safety

Many regulatory bodies worldwide, including the European Commission Scientific Committee on Food, the United Kingdom Food Agency, and the Japan Ministry for Health, Labor & Welfare.
